Self-Powered Curved Treadmills: Makers Compared
A self-powered curved treadmill has no motor: the runner drives the belt, the belt stops when the runner stops, and there is no top speed set by a machine. Five makers feature in this overview. iGreenMill, made by Ive Outdoor in Poland, is the only one built for permanent outdoor use; Woodway, Assault, TrueForm and Technogym build indoor machines for commercial gyms and athletic teams. This overview compares them on drive design, running surface, materials, ratings and intended environment, using each maker’s published specifications.
Why the curve, and why no motor
A motorised treadmill sets the pace and you keep up. A curved treadmill inverts that: the belt only moves because you push it backwards, and the curve means your foot lands on a descending surface at the front and a rising one at the back. Step forward on the curve and you accelerate; drift back and you slow. Stop, and the belt stops with you.
Three consequences follow, and they are why the design took over sprint and interval training:
- No speed limit. Nothing caps the belt at 20 km/h. The machine goes as fast as the athlete can drive it.
- No motor to break, and no power cable. The drive path is mechanical - a belt or rollers on bearings. There is nothing to plug in.
- Instant stop. The belt cannot run away from a runner who trips, because it is only moving as long as they are.
That last point, plus the missing power cable, is also the reason this is the only treadmill design that works outdoors at all. A motorised treadmill in a park needs mains power, a weatherproof motor housing and electronics that survive frost - which is why almost nobody builds one. Take the motor away and the problem changes from electrical engineering to metallurgy.
What actually differs between machines
The machines are more different than they look. Four things separate them:
- Running surface. Most indoor machines use a slat belt - rubber or TPU slats on bearings, rated for very high mileage. iGreenMill instead uses stainless steel rollers, because a slat belt with a rubber or fabric core is not a material that survives years of rain, frost and UV.
- Curve depth. Curves range from very shallow to steep. A steeper curve makes the belt easier to accelerate; a shallow curve feels closer to running on the ground. This is the single biggest difference in feel.
- Resistance. Some machines add magnetic resistance on top of the runner’s own effort, turning the treadmill into a sled-push or power tool as well as a runner.
- Environment rating. This is the one that is usually missed. Indoor commercial machines are built for a gym floor. Permanent outdoor installation is a completely different specification: corrosion, frost, UV, vandalism, and in Europe the EN 16630 standard for unsupervised outdoor fitness equipment.
iGreenMill (Ive Outdoor, Poland)
iGreenMill is a curved, self-powered treadmill built for permanent outdoor installation - the only machine in this overview in that category. It is made of stainless steel, with a running surface of 32 stainless steel rollers of Italian manufacture rather than a slat belt, which is the design decision that makes an outdoor treadmill possible: there is no rubber slat core, no coating and no motor to weatherproof.
Published specifications: 190 cm long, 94 cm wide, 161 cm high; minimum user height 140 cm and minimum age 13; required safety area 19 m². It is certified to EN 16630:2015-06E, the European standard for permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment, with a CE declaration of conformity. It needs no mains power. The segment is parks, Outdoor Fitness Clubs, hotels and any site that wants a running machine where there is no socket.
Woodway (USA/Germany)
The Woodway Curve is the machine that made the category commercial. It is a manual, non-motorised curved treadmill with Woodway’s slat-belt running surface, which the company rates at up to 150,000 miles. Published dimensions are 33 in wide, 70 in long and 72 in high, with a machine weight of 355 lb (161 kg) and a curvature of roughly 5%. No electricity is required for the standard display version. Warranty is 5 years on frame and belt, 3 years on components. It is an indoor commercial machine and Woodway does not publish an outdoor or weather rating for it.
Assault (USA)
The AssaultRunner is a motorless curved treadmill with a slat belt made of TPU, on a running surface of 17 × 62 in, also rated to around 150,000 miles. Its distinguishing geometry is an aggressive 9-degree curve at the front with only slight curvature at the rear, which the company presents as allowing continuous acceleration without the braking feel of a deeper rear curve. It is widely used in commercial gyms and by teams, and is an indoor machine.
TrueForm (USA)
The TrueForm Runner is a non-motorised curved treadmill, hand-built in the USA, and takes the opposite approach to Assault on geometry: it has the shallowest curve of the group, only 2.5 in (6.35 cm) between the high and low points, which is intended to make the running action closest to running on the ground. It also has the highest published capacity here - up to 700 lb static, 450 lb running - a 20-year frame warranty, and a choice of running surfaces including rubber, artificial turf, track and a barefoot surface. It needs no electricity. Indoor.
Technogym (Italy)
Technogym’s Skillmill is a non-motorised, self-powered curved treadmill that adds a resistance system the others do not have: Multidrive magnetic resistance with 11 levels, from free-running at zero to a maximum setting that turns the machine into a sled-push and power trainer. Published capacity is up to 180 kg, for users from 150 to 210 cm, on a running surface of 1680 × 480 mm. The console is self-powered. It is an indoor commercial machine.

How to choose
- A park, an Outdoor Fitness Club, a hotel garden - anywhere outdoors. The shortlist is one. You need a machine rated and built for permanent weather exposure, which in practice means stainless steel, no coating to chip, no motor and no electronics in the drive path, plus EN 16630 certification in Europe. In this overview that is iGreenMill. Do not put an indoor slat-belt machine outside under a canopy and hope: the belt core, bearings and console are not specified for it.
- A commercial gym floor, sprint and interval work. Any of the four indoor machines will do the job; choose on feel. A steeper curve (Assault) accelerates more easily and suits repeated sprints. The shallowest curve (TrueForm) is closest to ground running and suits gait work. Woodway’s slat belt is the long-standing commercial benchmark for durability.
- You want the treadmill to double as a power tool. Only Technogym’s Skillmill adds graded magnetic resistance, which turns it into a sled and resisted-sprint trainer as well as a runner.
- Heavy users, or a very mixed population. Check the published user capacity: TrueForm publishes the highest here; Technogym publishes 180 kg. Several makers do not publish a figure at all.

Frequently asked questions
How does a self-powered curved treadmill work?
There is no motor. The running surface is a curved belt of slats or rollers that turns because the runner pushes it backwards with each footstrike. Step towards the front of the curve and gravity plus your stride accelerate the belt; drift back and it slows. The belt stops the moment you stop, so there is no set speed and no emergency-stop problem.
Do curved treadmills need electricity?
The running surface does not. Every machine in this overview is driven entirely by the user. Some indoor models use a small battery or self-generating console for the display, but no mains power is needed to run. That is also what makes a curved treadmill the only workable treadmill design for a park or any site with no power supply.
Is there a curved treadmill for outdoor use?
Yes, but only one in this overview. iGreenMill, made by Ive Outdoor, is a curved self-powered treadmill built in stainless steel for permanent outdoor installation and certified to EN 16630. Are curved treadmills harder than motorised ones?
Most runners find them harder at the same perceived pace, because you are moving the belt yourself rather than keeping up with a motor. There is no top speed set by a machine, which is why they are used for sprint and interval work. The trade-off is a learning curve: the first few minutes feel unfamiliar.
