Outdoor Gyms in Lisbon
The capital rises on a series of hills above the wide Tagus estuary, with a long redeveloped riverfront of promenades, cycle paths and green space stretching west along the estuary towards the Atlantic coast. Viewpoints, gardens and a large forested park on the city's edge give varied ground for running and training, and free fitness stations along the river and in neighbourhood parks are increasingly common. Like most of Portugal, Lisbon treats outdoor fitness as public infrastructure: equipment installed in parks and green spaces, free to use, and built to the EN 16630 safety standard.
Training outdoors in Lisbon through the year
A Mediterranean climate tempered by the Atlantic gives hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with most rain falling between November and March and frost almost unknown. Outdoor training is comfortable in every month, spring and autumn are ideal, and in July and August sea breezes off the estuary help, though sessions are best kept to morning or evening. Planning around the seasons - and choosing equipment that stands up to the local weather - is what keeps an outdoor gym useful year-round. Our guide to outdoor training covers how to build a routine you can keep in any climate.
