Outdoor Gyms in Thessaloniki
Greece's second city curves around the head of the Thermaic Gulf, with the old upper town climbing to the Byzantine walls and the Seich Sou forest above, and dense apartment districts spreading east and west along the shore. The long waterfront promenade, running from the port past the White Tower to the eastern suburbs, is the city's main space for walking, running and cycling, complemented by the central university campus, the seafront of Kalamaria and the parks and squares of the residential districts. Like most of Greece, Thessaloniki treats outdoor fitness as public infrastructure: equipment installed in parks and green spaces, free to use, and built to the EN 16630 safety standard.
Training outdoors in Thessaloniki through the year
Thessaloniki has a Mediterranean climate with a continental edge. Summers are hot and humid, with July and August the warmest months, while winters are cooler than in Athens, with the cold Vardaris wind blowing down from the north, occasional frosts and rare snowfalls. Rain is spread through the year with a peak in late autumn and winter. April to June and September to November are the most comfortable periods for outdoor training, and summer sessions are best kept to the early morning or evening. Planning around the seasons - and choosing equipment that stands up to the local weather - is what keeps an outdoor gym useful year-round. Our guide to outdoor training covers how to build a routine you can keep in any climate.
